The practice has an association with Almary Green. to provide in-house financial services advice for clients, visit their website at Almary Green Being in Wisbech, Wheelers is well placed to look after the affairs of businesses and private individuals in West Norfolk and the Fens. History of the FirmWheelers Wheeler & Co. was founded in Wisbech in 1941 by the late Mr G A Wheeler a certified accountant. During the 1940’s the practice expanded when sub-offices were opened in Long Sutton and Downham Market. The 1950’s and 1960’s saw various changes in the business, with new partners joining as well as partners leaving. By 1965 there were 3 partners, but sadly Mr Geoffrey Wheeler, son of the founder and a partner at the time was killed in a car accident in June 1970. Following his death, Mr Michael Bell joined the firm as an employee in October 1970. The then senior partner, Mr G A Wheeler retired on 30 June 1971 and Mr Michael Bell became a partner on 1st January 1972 and retired from the firm on 30 April 2006. During the 1980’s there were various changes to the practice including on 1st January 1984, Mr Mervyn Baker merging his practice with Wheeler & Co. and subsequently becoming responsible for the Long Sutton office. The practice continued to grow and on 15th December 1990 acquired the Kings Lynn office of Coopers & Lybrand. Following this acquisition, on 1st May 1991 Mr Andrew Cave, previously a senior manager with Coopers & Lybrand became a partner. On 1st May 1994 Mrs Mary Plant became a partner after joining the firm following the acquisition of the Kings Lynn office. The King's Lynn office was transferred to Wisbech on 1st March 2003. On 1 May 2003 employee Robert Booty who joined the firm in 1996 became a partner. Helen Garrett previously an employee became a partner on 1 May 2006.
Mervyn Baker joined the firm in 1986 after merging his sole trader practice. Prior to this Mervyn qualified as a chartered accountant in 1978 whilst working for a local practice. Mervyn deals with a wide variety of businesses in terms of type and size, with his particular interest in assisting owner managed clients in developing their businesses. He has significant experience of the agricultural and horticultural industries. Mervyn is also responsible for the firms bookkeeping and payroll services as well as being responsible for personnel, training and information technology. Andrew Cave after graduating from St. Edmund Hall, Oxford, trained and qualified with Coopers & Lybrand as a chartered accountant. During his time with them he spent some years in the Middle East, becoming partner in charge of the Dubai office. He became a partner in Wheeler & Co following the acquisition of the Kings Lynn office of Coopers & Lybrand. Assisting owner managed businesses with the full range of accounting, taxation and business advice is Andrew’s main expertise with the emphasis being on business advisory and assurance areas. Andrew has been involved in management buy-outs and has developed an expertise in corporate matters generally including due diligence and assisting in negotiating both for purchasers and sellers. Andrew is responsible for audit compliance within the practice. Mary Plant joined the firm in December 1990 following the acquisition of the Kings Lynn office of Coopers & Lybrand and became a tax manager in the practice. Mary had previously qualified as a Certified Accountant in 1982 whilst working for a small firm of accountants in Hertfordshire and became a member of the Institute of Taxation in 1986. Although Mary deals with all aspects of advice for clients her main expertise are with tax planning for both businesses and wealthy individuals. Over the years Mary has gained considerable knowledge in advising on succession planning, inheritance tax as well as general tax planning for businesses. Mary is responsible for tax within the practice including compliance as well as planning. Robert Booty became a partner at Wheelers on 1 May 2003 after qualifying as a Chartered Certified Accountant in 2000 and as an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Tax in 2001. Robert has extensive experience in advising owner managed businesses together with a specialist knowledge in tax. Helen Garrett joined the partnership on 1 May 2006. Helen has been with Wheelers since her university days when she worked part-time in the accounts department. On leaving university where she studied for a degree in Business Studies. Helen joined as a trainee chartered accountant and qualified in 2003. She then went on to study for her CTA tax exams which she passed first time in December 2004. Helen is well known to many of our clients, both through her work in our assurance department dealing with the preparation of management accounts, audit and corporate taxation matters. |
